In a Target Inquiry lesson, there is a pre-determined overarching goal that the teacher is trying to get the students to. One example, is a Density Target Lab that was created by Flinn Scientific, in which "the concept of density is reinforced as students measure the volume and mass of an unknown liquid in a graduated cylinder, graph the results, and predict the mass of the empty cylinder from their data."
